The Damn Dirty Apes were started by members of both San Diego based
bands Wise Monkey Orchestra, and Superunloader. The band combines a collage
of influences and mixes them into mosh pit of musical cacophony that at
times can seem overwhelming but always brings the listener back to a solid
groove that is sure to provoke dance and movement. From groovy funk tunes
to techno jams and heavy drum and bass, the band is constantly weaving
a new path of musical expression.
DDA is best know for their live show, one in part being to the fact that
a studio album was never made, and second because the members of the band
feed off each other for energy and spontaneity only found in a live situation.
Every member of the band is capable of mind bending solos that are developed
dynamically and climaxed through a whirlwind of notes and rhythms but
sparked by musical talent and a passion for expression. From the gritty
yet sexy tones of Andy's bone, to the intricate scales and melting effects
of Marty's guitar work.
The rhythm section is held solid by the heavy thundering bass of Chris
McGreal uniquely placed in and around the syncopated beats of Chad Farran.
At times they are locked together in tight synchronized lines, only to
break free into individual meanderings, bouncing off each other's ideas
and then once again hitting the "one" with relieving resolution
and power.
The percussive accents of the band are provided by either the Afro Cuban
trained beats of Steve Haney or self-mastered techniques of Tim Pacheco.
Both provide different but uniquely exquisite combinations of congas,
bells, shekeres, and other worldly effects. Chad's ability to feed off
of them spawns an intricate sound felt both as heart-rushing and flowing.
Sean provides the technotronic feel that give DDA a contemporary sound,
yet still reminiscent of the earlier roots of electronic music using classic
keyboards, monophonic effects and samplers, lasers and lights. Sean's
solid meter and experience as a drummers keeps the groove super tight
and exploders a world of sound and texture.
Together the band produces a sound unmatched by today's "jam bands"
taking the the jam a mixing into a flavor that is sure to please the taste
buds.
